In cooperation with the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, the Arp Museum is showing a comprehensive show with works by 51 female painters from important European museums and private collections.
Women have been systematically ignored, excluded or treated as isolated cases in the history of art. International museums are currently rediscovering women artists from the Middle Ages to the modern era and honoring their role in the development of painting. Many of her top-class works have previously hung unseen in museum depots.
The exhibition not only presents artists celebrated in their time, such as Artemisia Gentileschi, Élisabeth Vigée-Le Brun and Mary Cassatt, but also newly discovered masters. They all defied the difficult working conditions and found their own artistic paths. The spectrum ranges from medieval illuminators from nunnery to artists of the Baroque period who learned in their father's workshop, to the pioneers of modernism who stood up for their equal place early on.
Accompanying the exhibition, dialogue tours, workshops, a family workshop and further training for teachers and educators are offered. A catalog accompanies the exhibition.
