In 2024, the Von der Heydt Museum is dedicating an exhibition with works from the Lothar Schirmer collection to the multiple documenta participant Lothar Baumgarten (1944 - 2018). The exhibition is embedded in the new collection presentation “Times and Spaces”, with which it interacts and opens up new interpretations.
Lothar Baumgarten lived and worked in Berlin and New York City. His work revolved around the question of what was his own and what was foreign; it was about distant spaces that tried to conquer the European eye and European politics. Baumgarten studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe and at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, among others. with Joseph Beuys. Among numerous other awards, he received the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 1984 for his work “America Señores Naturales”. As early as the 1970s, Baumgarten was concerned with the European view of foreign cultures. In 1978/79 he traveled to the Amazon region and lived there for 18 months with two Yãnomãmi tribes on the upper Orinoco in Venezuela. In addition to his photographs, his installation works are particularly impressive, as they develop a sensual and tactile effect and at the same time subtly encourage people to think about global and socio-political issues.
