The Dortmunder U was built in 1926/1927 as a "fermentation and storage cellar" for the Dortmunder Union brewery and is a listed building. The city of Dortmund had the "Dortmunder U" converted into a center for art and creativity for the European Capital of Culture - RUHR.2010. Today it houses the Ostwall Museum and the Hartware Medienkunstverein, among other things.

There are seven disabled parking spaces in the multi-storey car park. The path in front of the entrance is easy to walk and drive on, access to the building is at ground level and without steps. The door widths are suitable for wheelchair users. All rooms that can be used and accessed by visitors are on the ground floor or can be reached by elevator.

There are designated wheelchair spaces in the cinema hall. These are stepless and can be reached with a maximum incline of 6%.

Guided tours for people with walking disabilities and wheelchair users are offered by prior arrangement.

The cinema in the U has an inductive audio system. The public area in the U is equipped with a guidance system for the visually impaired. A further expansion is planned.

Disabled toilets are available on the ground floor and 5th floor. A Euro key is required for the toilets.

Guided tours for people with visual impairments and blind people are available on request. Tactile objects are available for the guided tours. An audio guide is available that can be operated independently by people with visual impairments and the blind.
