Inspired by the work of a composer, the Dutch painter José Heerkens, who had a solo exhibition in the renowned Kröller-Müller Museum near Arnhem in 2023, uses horizontal lines and grids to design her oil paintings. Only she doesn't compose with notes, but with colors. Color is the element around which everything ultimately revolves. At first glance you might think it's about construction, about the arrangement of lines, grids and color fields. These elements certainly play a role in her work, but ultimately the color effects created by the pigments of the paints on the canvas are what is essential for José Heerkens. Geometry is not an end, but a means used by color to achieve a universal imagery that expresses our connection to life and nature. José Heerkens changes the mix of colors, the application of paint and even her brush strokes in each of her grids. One layer of color overlays the other, as do the lines, which are sometimes solid and then reapplied at other times.

Heerken's work also includes the freedom that she leaves in her pictures. However, you don't see a classic white canvas, but rather untreated linen. These “free spaces” are important to her so that the work is “open enough to enter,” as she herself puts it. The viewer should be able to enter the work and get involved with it. Her field of work is exploring the effect of a color in direct interaction with another color next to it. As she herself says, it is a continuous process of looking, feeling, thinking and painting itself.

The opening of the exhibition will take place on April 14th from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The finissage of the exhibition will take place on May 1, 2024 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
